Civil protection: people and equipment

Two trailers for the Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Brand- und Katastrophenschutz (Lower Saxony state office for fire and disaster protection)

Last summer in Germany, we learned how important the tireless commitment of aid workers is in the event of a disaster, when masses of water made their way, devastated entire regions and many people not only lost their homes. The tasks that need to be dealt with in such a case are diverse, and the organization is a challenge. Because civil protection as a whole is not set up as a permanently available auxiliary force. Disaster control or civil protection describes much more an organizational principle, which is defined by the centrally managed and controlled organization of emergency services and authorities in the event of a so-called major disaster situation. Disaster control is the responsibility of the federal states, but it is basically organized in the same way in all federal states.

Aid organizations work closely together

Depending on the type of catastrophe or major situation, a wide variety of responsibilities and competencies may be required. The actual civil protection forces include aid organizations such as the German Red Cross, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, the Malteser Hilfsdienst or the German Life Saving Society. The fire brigade is the most important pillar of civil protection. This includes both the volunteer fire brigades and the professional fire brigades. In the state of Lower Saxony, all fire service members are trained at the Lower Saxony State Office for Fire Protection and Disaster Prevention (Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Brand- und Katastrophenschutz / NLBK) with locations in Celle and Loy. Already at the end of 2020 we had the first contact with those responsible for this facility. In the meantime, we have handed over two vehicles to the civil protection team in Lower Saxony.

Professionalism and reliability

All members of our team attach great importance to providing targeted and purposeful advice when selecting a product. However, legal framework conditions require an additional degree of professionalism and reliability when working with authorities. Last but not least, an appropriate price/performance ratio is a decisive factor. The implementation of a project in cooperation with state institutions shows confidence in the individual strengths of our team as well as in the ES-GE brand as a whole. But far away from the administrative tasks, the focus of the trainers and the emergency personnel is on the reliability of the equipment. Because in addition to the know-how of the emergency services, the equipment is ultimately the cornerstone for fast and targeted help.

MAX Trailer MAX110

A MAX Trailer MAX110 delivered by us has been part of the civil protection vehicle fleet in Lower Saxony for almost a year. The modular system derived from the product portfolio of the Faymonville brand offers solutions for numerous requirements. Basically, the high processing quality and the excellent price-performance ratio speak in favor of MAX Trailer. The best conditions for the successful implementation of the project. The delivered MAX Trailer MAX110 weighs approx. 12,300 kg. All three axles of the low-loader are hydraulically steered. The axles can also be controlled manually using a remote control. The maximum axle load of 10,000 kg permitted in Germany in combination with the fifth wheel load of 18,000 kg enables a payload of approx. 35,700 kg. Thanks to the WADER container bags in the loading area, the MAX110 from MAX Trailer is also suitable for transporting 20, 30 or 40 foot containers.

Ramps at the rear

The delivered MAX Trailer MAX110 is equipped with two-part ramps. Excavators or generally self-propelled construction machines, which are often used in the event of a disaster, can be driven over the rear onto the loading area. When loading, the ramps can be loaded with a maximum of 40,000 kg (per pair). The galvanized steel ramps are a total of approx. 4,150 mm long and approx. 800 mm wide. The two-part construction and the overall length result in a low drive-on angle. The ramps are operated entirely hydraulically. This means that the ramps are not only folded in and out with the help of the built-in electro-hydraulic unit. The hydraulics also allow lateral shifting of the ramps. If necessary, the ramps can be easily adjusted to the track width of the construction machinery or other vehicles.

ES-GE semi-trailer with reinforced frame

Last week we handed over another vehicle to the NLBK team. The 3-axle trailer from the ES-GE brand is designed for high point loads. Including the reinforced frame with profile cross members, the robust semi-trailer weighs approx. 6,750 kg. The fifth wheel load is 18,000 kg, the total axle load is 27,000 kg. Technically, the trailer offers a possible payload of approx. 38,250 kg. Both vehicles will be used in the future for general logistics tasks in civil protection. The transported goods include, for example, vehicles, containers or even tents. Talks about further projects are already planned.

At this point, we would like to expressly take the opportunity to thank all the helpers and emergency services who sacrifice themselves either every day as part of their job or on call in an emergency to help others.

Langhoff Transporte receives individually configured KEMPF tipper semi-trailer

Even small(est) businesses receive tailor-made solutions

Our customer base is broad. This refers both to the numerous sectors and also to the size of the individual companies. Long-established traditional companies are just as much a part of our clientele as young, up-and-coming individual companies that often start out as “one-man businesses”. Langhoff Transporte followed this path in 2020. Today’s owner, Lars Langhoff, started the transport company as a “one-man operation” with just one truck. The transport company based in Schleswig-Holstein specializes in the transport of bulk goods, in particular grain, animal feed, sand and fertilizer. The partly seasonal demand leads to a short-term increase in the number of employees, especially at harvest time. This shows how important even supposedly small companies are for the level of employment in the transport industry.

Everyone starts small

Whether large or small – all our customers rely equally on our purchase, rental and hire-purchase options. While large companies can often still compensate for machine failures, small companies in particular are highly dependent on the functionality of their vehicle and machine park. It is all the more important that our customers can rely on both our products and our services. The core business of our company is trailers for heavy transport, but in particular, of course, extendable low-loader semi-trailers. Nevertheless, we offer our customers numerous other solutions with which we can selectively broaden the basis of our product portfolio, whether for rental or sale. Lars Langhoff, owner of Langhoff Transporte, decided to buy a new KEMPF tipping semi-trailer. Our team configured the 3-axle tipper according to our customer’s requirements and delivered a tailor-made vehicle.

KEMPF aluminum superstructure with 53.1 m³ capacity

Lars Langhoff now can rely on a maximum of approx. 53.1 m³ on three axles. The KEMPF tipper semi-trailer designed for a two-axle tractor unit is equipped with air-sprung SAF axles of the type INTRADISC. They are alle equipped with disk brakes and as well specially designed for off-road use. The first of the three axles can be raised fully automatically or as a starting aid. As the link between the chassis and the road, the axles literally take on a supporting role. This is not the only reason why KEMPF leaves nothing to chance in production. In order to ensure perfect coordination of the axle geometry, the chassis are laser measured before delivery. In terms of increasing efficiency, this step in the production chain serves to reduce running costs by reducing both tire wear and ultimately fuel consumption.

Equipment of the KEMPF tipper semi-trailer

When handling bulk goods of different densities, you shouldn’t rely on your gut feeling when it comes to tonnage. With the help of the built-in loading gauge, you always have an overview of the current loading status of the tipper trailer. The axle load can also be shown on the display in the driver’s cab via the EBS Canbus signal, provided the tractor unit has the appropriate equipment. The actual work during the unloading process is carried out by a hydraulic front tipping cylinder from Hyva, which is controlled via the tractor’s hydraulics. If the load lacks the necessary impulse, the built-in vibrating shaker can have a supporting effect. It does its job discreetly under the approx. 7 mm thick aluminum floor of the trough.

Custom made tarpaulin

Another important detail: the tarpaulin of the tipper. It is colour-coordinated with the tractor unit and is equipped with a central locking system. Its task is to secure and protect the load itself. The tarpaulin, which is made of high-quality PVC, can be wind up onto a 60 mm aluminum tube by using a crank. Another feature is the slider at the rear, which covers a 400 x 400 mm opening. The small door is intended for fine-grained goods. In combination with the supplied dust bag, the operator can conveniently unload grain, for example. The two wing doors at the rear are secured with espagnolette locks and also with an automatic, pneumatically controlled four-hook lock. Last but not least, the icing on the cake: it’s not just the trough that’s made of aluminium. Lars Langhoff has decided to have aluminum rims fitted by Alcoa.

We wish Mr. Langhoff a lot of joy with the new vehicle.

Prangenberg und Zaum | From rent to purchase

Prangenberg und Zaum – almost 100 years of experience

With sustainability towards the future

In 1930 Heinrich Zaum laid the foundation with a small haulage company in Viersen for today’s Prangenberg und Zaum GmbH (P&Z), which was founded in 1982 by Peter Zaum and Paul Hermann Prangenberg. 40 years later, the haulage and demolition company P&Z is one of the leading German companies in the dismantling and demolition industry. Together with 130 employees, P&Z is characterized in particular by dismantling projects throughout Germany, BeNeLux and Switzerland. P&Z included the topics of environment and recycling in its portfolio early on. The structure of the company also follows the idea of sustainability and a pursuit of continuity, as nine members of the Prangenberg and Zaum families are currently working for P&Z in the third generation. In accordance with the company philosophy “We create space for the future”, all those involved have commited to taking responsibility for the environment and for future generations.

Flexibility as a long-term success factor

Medium to long-term planning of the vehicle fleet is essential for all of our customers. Experienced customers like P&Z usually know exactly what they want when they approach us. Nevertheless, our task is the same for every prospective customer or customer. With the numerous options from our brand and product portfolio, we select products that meet the requirements of daily use. Always at the top of the list of desired properties: flexibility. On the one hand, this refers to the requirements for the vehicles, but on the other hand it also applies to our rental service or our in-house workshop. For example, our rental program is ideal for our customers to convince themselves of the performance of the selected vehicle type in real operation with minimized risk. P&Z used exactly this path.

From the test to the rental agreement to delivery

In accordance with P&Z’s requirement profile, we initially provided our customer with a MAX100 equipped with wheel wells from MAX Trailer as part of a rental agreement. The three-axle low-loader semi-trailer was able to impress after only a short time in use. Besides its provided persuasion during the renting period, it also bridged the delivery time of the new vehicle ordered. We always draw our customers’ attention to the fact that we do not strictly separate rental and sale from one another. At the end of the rental period the new vehicle was ready for collection at our company premises in Essen. After a routine technical check, we included the rented MAX Trailer MAX100 back in our rental pool.

MAX Trailer MAX100 for Prangenberg and Zaum

The MAX Trailer MAX100 delivered by us is a low-loader semi-trailer with three axles. It is basically equipped with self-steering axles. With the selected equipment, the dead weight is approx. 9,300 kg. An axle load of 3 x 10,000 kg and the fifth wheel load of 18,000 kg result in a technically possible payload of approx. 38,700 kg. Deviating from the standard, two pairs of wheel recesses are installed in the loading bed of the self-steering low loader – one pair in front of the first axle and one pair between the first and second axle. Covers can be uses to create an even loading area. The covers have quick-release fasteners and an anti-slip bottom. When not in use, the user can store the covers in the excavator handle recess at the rear of the MAX100.

Electro-hydraulic ramps

The pictures show the rental vehicle with spring assisted ramps. For the new vehicle, P&Z opted for electro-hydraulic ramps. They are controlled via a hydraulic pump, which only has to be supplied with power via a 24V NATO socket. The ramps can be moved sideways and can therefore be adapted to different track widths within the design limits. The installed outriggers help, when transporting extra-wide vehicles, as the loading area can be widened to approx. 3,000 mm. In accordance with P&Z’s request, the outer wheels were replaced with Alcoa aluminium rims. Looks good and matches the rest of the vehicle. A good choice.
